Hafnarfjörður recently changed the rules for its leisure allowance, so that children aged 14 and over can now use the allowance to pay for a gym membership or a similar access pass related to sports and physical activity, which is valid for 3 months or longer. The entitlement is valid from the New Year of the year in which the children turn 14.

Reduction of age thresholds for the use of leisure allowance for gym membership

Hafnarfjörður recently changed the rules on the leisure allowance. so that children aged 14 and over can now use the grant to pay for a gym membership or a similar access pass related to sport and physical activity, which is valid for 3 months or longer, provided certain conditions regarding participant education and administration are met. Previously, the age threshold was 16 years and over. An analysis of data on the use or utilisation rate of the leisure time grant reveals a significant drop in participation at the age of 14. Physical activity and a healthy lifestyle have significant preventative value, and it is important to find ways to encourage continued participation in sport.

Increased choice and opportunities for activity for 14-year-olds and over

The aim of the change is to encourage children and young people aged 14 and over to continue with active exercise and social interaction during their crucial and formative teenage years, and to use the leisure time grant which is valid until the age of 18. It is well-established that physical activity and being active have a positive effect on the quality of life and well-being of children and young people. With this decision, the City of Hafnarfjörður aims to increase the likelihood of continued physical activity and engagement among 14-year-olds and older.  It is then the responsibility of parents and guardians to find a suitable activity or hobby with their child, whether in organised sports and leisure activities or at a gym.

The authorisation is valid from the New Year of the year in which the children turn 14.
