Residential property owners in Hafnarfjörður will soon receive a special additional reduction in property taxes, compared to the previously issued assessment. The property tax rate for this year will be lowered from 0.2461% to 0.2231% to offset the increase in property valuation. This is in line with a previous decision by the council majority to reduce the town's average property taxes to offset the rise in property valuations, taking into account inflation.
The aim of reducing property taxes did not fully materialise.
Water and sewerage charges have already been reduced year-on-year to offset the increase in property valuation. Following the publication of the property tax assessments at the beginning of the year, it was discovered that the calculations were not correct, meaning that the intended reduction in property taxes was not fully passed on to residents. This will now be corrected, and owners of residential properties in Hafnarfjörður will be able to fully enjoy the lower property taxes this year, in accordance with the promise of the majority of the Hafnarfjörður town council.
„We decided to significantly reduce property tax rates in Hafnarfjörður to offset a substantial increase in property valuations.“ says Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, the mayor. „It has come to light that the reduction was not fully reflected in the calculation of property taxes at the turn of the year, but this has now been rectified so that the residents of Hafnarfjörður can enjoy this tax reduction as intended.“
Council tax amounts will change from April 2023
The change to property taxes was addressed at Meeting of the Hafnarfjörður Town Council today and the matter was referred to the Town Council for its meeting on Wednesday, 1 March. The reduction is expected to be passed on to residential property owners in Hafnarfjörður from April 2023. Residential property owners who paid their property taxes in a single payment at the start of the year will receive a refund, and the technical implementation is underway.
