Noise

Noise is unwanted or harmful sound that can affect people's quality of life.

Is it too noisy at home?

If you live on a noisy street, you can apply for a grant to improve your windows to reduce the noise.

The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður provides grants for measures on the windows of houses on busy roads. Grants are awarded for the improvement of window sound insulation on the sides of a house where the noise level is calculated to be 65 dB(A) or higher. Priority is given to those living in the worst conditions.

Applicants must describe the proposed measures, and the Environmental and Planning Service assesses whether they are sufficient.

The town's action plan against noise

An action plan against noise was approved by the town council on 6 March 2019 in accordance with Noise regulations No. 724 of 2008. The plan aims to reduce noise and its adverse effects. It is based on the results of a 2012 noise mapping exercise, together with noise maps showing sound levels at a height of 2 metres above ground level.

The preparation of an action plan against noise is part of the European Union's Directive on environmental noise (2002/49/EC), which was implemented in Iceland by the Regulation on noise mapping and action plans no. 1000/2005.
