Cleaning and care

A beautiful and safe local environment makes everyone feel better.

The Environmental Watch

The aim of the environmental watch is to raise residents' environmental awareness, beautify the town and improve cleanliness. Clubs and groups can beautify the town and receive a grant for doing so.

Would you like to be on the environmental watch?

Associations and groups are offered the opportunity to clean twelve defined areas in Hafnarfjörður in exchange for a financial grant. One group is responsible for each area. The emphasis in each area is on clearing litter and debris from main paths and main roads, streams, ponds and the coastline, natural lava fields and open spaces. The groups that are selected will be required to clean their area twice a year, once between 1 May and 1 June, and again between 1 and 30 September.

The payment for each area is set at 75,000 kr. per visit, with a maximum total of 150,000 kr. per area.

Groups are recruited in the first half of each year. Further information is available at hafnarfjordur@hafnarfjordur.is or by phone 585 5500.

Who can be on the environmental watch?

The project is open to all clubs, organisations and groups. We aim to select groups with a diverse range of activities for the project.

Each group needs a leader to liaise with the town. Clean-ups are planned in consultation, and arrangements are made for how they will be carried out. If groups consisting of children or young people apply to participate (for example, junior sections of sports clubs or scout troops), it is a condition that the group leader is an adult and that adults work with the children during the clean-up.

The accompanying information for group applications must state the following:

  • Name of a club, organisation or group.
  • The main aims and purpose of the association.
  • A brief report on the activities of the last 3 years.
  • Number of members and age distribution (children, teenagers and adults).
  • Who will carry out the work (if children or young people, who will work with them).
  • How to use the strength.
  • Any requests for a location, if any.
  • Name and details of the group leader (address, telephone, email address).

Rubbish bags are available from Service Centre From Hafnarfjörður to Norðurhellu 2 if groups wish.
