Rubbish collection

In Hafnarfjörður, households are legally required to separate their waste into four streams: food waste, mixed waste, plastic and paper. In addition, residents are required to sort glass, metals, textiles and deposit-free packaging, which can be disposed of at local collection points or the nearest recycling centre. Food waste and general waste are collected every fortnight, while plastic packaging and paper are collected every 28 days.

All general information about the four-stream household waste collection can be found on the website. www.flokkum.is.

A few points for residents to bear in mind:

Residents are asked and encouraged to keep their premises tidy and to properly secure their rubbish bins. This ensures safety and makes the work of those who collect waste for the City of Hafnarfjörður easier.

      • Snow needs to be cleared from the storage area to keep the route to the containers clear. If this is not done, there is a risk the containers will not be collected.
      • Stairs must be accessible, not slippery, and have a ramp for moving containers over them.
      • It's not good to overfill the bins; if they are packed too tightly, the rubbish can get stuck and won't fall out during collection.
      • Staff must be able to do their jobs without taking off their gloves. This applies to locks, fastenings and doors that need to be operated for emptying to take place.
