How to avoid traffic jams and pollution?
The toilet is not a rubbish bin. A great deal of work and expense is involved in cleaning pumps and disposing of rubbish. By reducing the amount of unwanted items and substances we send down the drain, we can significantly lower costs. This also applies to kitchen sinks.
The main cause of pump blockages is:
- Kitchen letter
- Fibre cloths
- condoms
- sanitary towels and tampons
- Earphones
- Cooking fat and butter
- sauce
Good treatment of wastewater can significantly reduce its pollution impact. It is best to reduce pollution by not flushing hazardous substances or medicines, but instead taking them to a waste collection point.
About Hafnarfjörður Sewerage
Hafnarfjörður Sewerage was established in July 2003 as a B-part company with an independent budget. The Environment and Operations Board manages the sewerage on behalf of the town council.
In the spring of 2005, extensive sewerage works began in the town, and the clean-up of the coastline was commenced. The treatment plant in Hraunavík was commissioned in 2008 and now handles all sewage from Hafnarfjörður. The treated sewage is pumped out to sea for approximately 2 km, at a depth of 23 metres. This is a sewage system with Stage 1 treatment, in accordance with the European Union directive and the Sewerage and Wastewater Regulations No. 798/1999. In addition, all sewage is passed through grease and sand traps.
The new pumping and treatment station was designed so that its capacity could be easily doubled and it could be upgraded to secondary treatment.
