About the Hafnarfjörður water supply

The first steps towards a water supply in the town were taken when the Hafnarfjörður Waterworks Society was founded in 1904. Initially, residents collected water from taps installed throughout the town. Later, water began to be piped into homes.

The Hafnarfjörður Waterworks is now responsible for the collection and distribution of drinking water in Hafnarfjörður. Water is piped to the town from Kaldárbotnar. The current supply line dates from 1950 and still meets the town's water needs.

The water supply company's operations comply with food regulations, and it has an effective internal control system and an operating licence from the Health Authority of Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and Kópavogur.

Over the past few decades, numerous exploration boreholes have been drilled near Hafnarfjörður. The first boreholes were for geothermal exploration and were all shallow, at 60–100 m. In the last decade, the Water Utility had nearly sixty exploratory boreholes drilled to investigate groundwater; the deepest were almost 90 m. The boreholes are spread across the area from Helgafell to Straumsvík.
