Day-care providers
Daycare providers in Hafnarfjörður are self-employed but receive a licence to operate from the town, which oversees their activities.
Subsidies
Childminders have their own price lists and are not permitted to coordinate them, which is why fees vary from one childminder to another.
The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður subsidises day care.
Reimbursements start at:
- Parents cohabiting when a child is 10 months old
- Single parents when a child is 6 months old
- for students when a child is 6 months old. Both parents must be in education and proof of enrolment must be submitted.
The conditions for reimbursement are that:
- A parent and child are permanently resident in Hafnarfjörður.
- that the child is covered by accident insurance
- that the relevant day-care provider has a professional licence
- A care agreement is made between the parents and the childminder and approved by the childcare representative.
Sibling discount
A sibling discount is available when siblings are simultaneously with a childminder, in a nursery or in after-school care. The second child receives a 75% discount and the third a 100% discount.
The care placement agreement must state the name, National Insurance number and address of the older sibling. The day care officer will then send confirmation to the relevant party.

The monthly contribution is based on the child's maximum stay, as follows.

You must apply for the additional subsidy and submit all required documents by the 20th of the month before the additional subsidy is to commence. Please note that discounts and additional subsidies are not retroactive and will therefore take effect from the next month after the application has been approved.
