New structure of the nursery day

A new schedule for the nursery day in Hafnarfjörður will take effect from 1 September 2024. The preschool day will have two parts: professional activities and free time. Preschool fees will be lower to reflect the shorter, more flexible hours. The academic year will be 180 days long, with other days designated as special registration days.

Discount available

  • Sibling discount Available when siblings are at the same time with a childminder, in a nursery or in after-school care. The second child receives a 75% discount and the third a 100% discount.
  • Income-related allowance. Parents can apply for a means-tested discount on Our pages which is 50% on the one hand and 75% on the other. A discount is only granted on the standard accommodation fee. See the income thresholds in the tariff.
  • Discount for the death of a spouse or sudden disability. A parent can claim the 75% discount (same as the lower income threshold) for one year.

The discount applies to the accommodation fee, not to meals (breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack). Either a sibling discount or an income-related discount is provided, but never both.

Nursery fee calculator

The nursery fee calculator works by selecting the average daily attendance and the number of children. Nursery fees are based on a child's total weekly attendance and are charged at the end of each month. The calculator automatically calculates a sibling discount if two or more children are selected (the discount applies only to attendance fees and not to meal fees).

If the total stay averages more than 30 hours per week, a charge will be made for the time exceeding 30 hours. A child's days of attendance may be of varying lengths, but the minimum attendance per day is four hours.

Fees for a longer stay

If a child stays for an average of seven hours a day, the boarding fee is 15,421 kr. per month, plus meal charges.
If a child attends for an average of eight hours a day, the attendance fee is 31,161 kr. per month, plus meal charges.

The arrangement of stay-over times is then an agreement between the head of the department or the nursery manager and the guardian.
