Check-in

In the year your child turns 6, you will receive a letter at the start of the year with information about primary school enrolment. Enrolment opens at the start of the year before the autumn term. You enrol your child at Our pages online. At the same time, it is possible to apply recreation centre. Applications for a play scheme are made through Valu.  

As spring approaches, the school your child has been placed at will send you information about the upcoming school year., Meal subscription and other things you need to know.

School district

Hafnarfjörður is a single school district divided into school catchment areas. A child's registered address determines which local school they are guaranteed a place at.

You can also apply for a school for your child in another ward or another local authority. In that case, you apply for a school place with the relevant school. If the application is approved, you need to apply for the City of Hafnarfjörður's contribution on My Pages.

Relocation of schools outside the home address

When applying for a school transfer outside of the home municipality, the consent of the home municipality and the receiving municipality is required. The transfer is applied for at my pages.  

Continuing education

If your child is already registered at a school outside their local authority or at a private school, the guardian must request continued enrolment each year by renewing the application. The application is made on my pages.

What to take to school?

A school bag, a packed lunch and swimming costume, where applicable, are required. The children go outside for break time twice a day, so it is advisable that they are dressed appropriately for the weather and perhaps have a change of clothes in their bag. The school provides all textbooks, exercise books and stationery.

The role of parents

You are responsible for your children's education and are expected to monitor their learning in collaboration with the child and their teacher.

If your child needs time off school, you must apply for permission. If your child is unwell, you must inform the school. Any disruption to their education due to absence is your responsibility, and you must ensure that your child makes up for any work they may have missed.
