A youth centre is a place for young people to meet and spend their free time in a pleasant space. The staff at youth centres are on hand to provide young people with support and assistance in bringing their ideas to life, whatever they may be.

A youth centre is a place for young people to meet and spend their free time in a pleasant space. Youth centre staff are on hand to provide young people with support and assistance in putting their ideas into practice, whatever they may be. 

The nest

Hreiðrið Youth Centre is in the Innovation Centre by the Stream.There is a lot on offer for people aged 16-25. The Nest is open from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays.

In the Nest there is: 

  • A comfortable sofa and a games area.
  • Pool table and dartboard .
  • It is possible to start a club.
  • Role-players on Thursdays.

A wide range of facilities are available for young people throughout the Innovation Centre. These include: 

  • Sound studio to record music and podcasts. 
  • Photography facilities and you can record videos. 
  • Experimental workshop and guided tours are available between 3pm and 5pm. 
  • Technology workshop In the spirit of a FabLab, which is a workshop for creation. 
  • The cup, A coffee spot where you can sit, chat, cook yourself a meal and connect.

A new facility has been opened at the Innovation Centre by the Stream. It is called Hreiðrið Youth Centre. There is a lot on offer for people aged 16-25. The Nest is open from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays. It offers:

The role of youth centres

The aim of youth centres is to promote culture and improve services for young people in Hafnarfjörður. On the one hand, leisure activities are offered that have preventative, educational and cultural value. Alternatively, it provides a facility for recreation and socialising with peers in a safe environment. Emphasis is placed on diversity and ensuring that everyone feels welcome. 

The young people are always the driving force in the work, while the project managers oversee the day-to-day running and the professional work. 

Youth centre activities

Work is carried out in clubs, committees, group activities and temporary projects. The emphasis is on engaging people to participate and take action in the work, particularly those who need special encouragement and support. Emphasis is placed on democratic working methods and on strengthening the self-confidence and social skills of young people, with an equal opportunities perspective as a guiding principle.
