People with disabilities
People with disabilities have the right to the services and support they need to live an independent and active life. In Hafnarfjörður, there is Servant leadership Kept as a guiding principle. Warmth and encouragement are shown in all situations.
Legal protection
People with disabilities can turn to the ombudsman with anything concerning their rights, finances and personal matters.
What does an ombudsman do?
An advocate helps people with disabilities to get their rights.
Examples of what an advocate does:
- Monitor whether people with disabilities enjoy their rights.
- Helping people with disabilities to achieve their rights.
- Points out what could be improved in the service for people with disabilities.
- Assistance in getting a personal advocate.
Anyone who believes that a person with a disability is being discriminated against should report it to the Equality Officer.
To contact the Ombudsman, you can send an email to postur@rettindagaesla.is or ring the phone 554 8100.
You can also get more information from Developmental aid which are an advocacy organisation for people with disabilities by phone 588 9390.
Personal spokesperson
People with a disability who find it difficult to advocate for themselves can choose a personal advocate to help them communicate their wishes. An advocate can, for example, assist with communication with healthcare professionals, choosing where to live, employment, leisure activities and managing finances.
Personal advocates need to be familiar with the personal needs and interests of the person they are assisting. They are also required to attend the relevant training courses. The role is unpaid, but expenses incurred in carrying out the duties will be reimbursed.
