People with disabilities have the right to the services and support they need to live an independent and active life. In Hafnarfjörður, there is Servant leadership Kept as a guiding principle. Warmth and encouragement are shown in all situations.
Family support
Apply for supportFamilies of children with disabilities can get short-term respite care for children and young people with high care needs.
Short stay
Short-term stays offer rest and recreation, assistance and guidance with activities of daily living, as well as preparing for moving out of the parental home. The service eases the burden on families and gives children a change and an opportunity to enjoy themselves.
Adults with disabilities who have long-term support needs and are living at home with their parents can also access short-term accommodation while waiting for other services.
The stay can be either regular or just for a specific period. The length of the stay varies according to individual circumstances. Often, it is a few hours a day.
The service for short-term stays is free of charge. However, individuals over the age of 18 must pay for their food.

- Moorland clearing in Garðabær is short-term accommodation for children aged 16 and under.
- Hnotuberg 19 In Hafnarfjörður, there is a 24-hour service for people aged 16 and over. Six individuals stay there at any one time. The stay is for 3, 4 or 7 hours every four weeks.
- Hrauntunga In Kópavogur, it is for people aged 18 and over and is preparation for independent living. The stay there is for a fortnight at a time.
Foster families
Families of children with disabilities have access to a support family. The child can stay with the support family for a short time to give their parents a break and to provide the child with a change of scenery, encouragement and to develop their social skills. The support family usually has the child for two 24-hour periods a month.
