What does financial assistance consist of?

Financial assistance is for individuals and families who cannot provide for themselves without help. There can be various reasons why people need financial support. The assistance is always aimed at supporting residents to become self-sufficient.

Applicants must explore all their entitlements to other payments, including from the state pension scheme, the Employment Service, occupational pension schemes and trade union funds, before the City of Hafnarfjörður can provide financial assistance.

  • You must be over 18 years of age and a resident of Hafnarfjörður.
  • Financial assistance for individuals can be up to 255,800 kr. per month.
  • Financial assistance for married couples or cohabiting partners can be up to 409,280 per month.

How do you apply for financial assistance?

You apply at Iceland.is and you will be sent an email when the application has been reviewed or if any documents are missing to complete the processing.

  • If the application is approved, you will be paid at the next pay day.
  • If an application is refused, you will receive an explanation of the decision. If you feel it is not justified, you can refer it to the Benefits Appeal Tribunal with the help of your social worker.

Conditions of financial assistance

  • The condition for receiving financial assistance is that an individual resides in Iceland and does not receive support or work in another country.
  • When applying for financial assistance for the first time, or if six months have passed since the last application, the applicant is required to prove their identity by presenting themselves at the service centre with a valid photographic ID within two working days of submitting the application.
