Hlíðarendi children visit the mayor
"What does the mayor do?" asked the eldest children at Hlíðarendi Nursery School when they visited Mayor Valdimar Víðisson this morning. The children arrived by bus, stopped at Thorsplan and sang a few songs. They then went back out into the day after a successful visit to the mayor.
Nursery school children from Hlíðarendi on a visit
What does the mayor do? asked the eldest children at Hlíðarendi Nursery School when they visited Valdimar Víðisson this morning. „I'm welcoming guests and this is the most fun visit so far, getting to meet you all.,“ he replied.
The senior class of Hlíðarendi visits the mayor annually. Just as these five to six-year-olds, who are starting primary school this autumn, met the mayor in his office for the first time, it was also the first time that Valdimar, who took over at the start of the year, met the nursery school children!
A lively conversation
Valdimar described how the mayor dealt with all sorts of issues. The conversation was lively. The children wanted to know many things: What is your favourite book? Do you know the president? What is your favourite flower?
Valdimar revealed that thrillers were his favourite. "What are thrillers?" someone then asked, and it was explained straight away. But do you think clowns are cool? „Yes, I love yellow fields,“ he said.
Improvements wanted for the school grounds
The children also wanted to see improvements to their school playground. They feel that a play bus is needed. Valdimar told them that the town's playgrounds needed regular maintenance and that primary and nursery school playgrounds should be inspected in particular. "But what's a nursery bus?" he asked. The children explained, and that they also wanted a jet plane.
The children then invited the mayor for a visit. They have spent the last fortnight crafting and building up the town of Hafnarfjörður, a unique work of art, which the children put up from scratch every year – a new group. They listed what each of them had done: I made a swimming pool. I made an airport, I made… came the voices from the sofa set in the mayor's office. It was packed.
Child-friendly community
Valdimar told the children that the aim was for Hafnarfjörður to be recognised as a child-friendly community in the autumn. „That means we really need to listen to what you say,“ he said. They could have opinions on things and let them know what they wanted to see improved and better.
„Yes, I'll come on Monday and see your work.,“ he said at last. A group photo was then taken, and the children, who had come by bus, stopped at Thorsplan and sang a few songs, before heading out into the day after a successful visit to the mayor.
Yes, the future is bright in a child-friendly society.
