Special housing support

From the New Year, the Employment Authority will handle the processing of new
housing benefits, but the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður handles the administration of special housing support,
which replaces specific housing benefit. The Hafnarfjörður Town Council approved at its meeting on the 18th.
Last January, new rules on special housing support were introduced. Special
Housing support is financial assistance for paying rent, in addition to housing benefit.

Conditions for approval of the application

Payment of special housing support takes over from payment
special housing benefit. The applicant's combined income and assets must be below the specified upper income and capital limits. The condition for an application to be approved is that the applicant:

  entitled to housing benefit
• to have turned 18
• have their legal residence in
  Hafnarfjörður

Special housing support is
calculated as a fixed percentage of housing benefits, so that for every 1,000
kr. in housing benefit, the tenant receives 700 kr. for a special
Housing support. Housing benefit and special housing support can never
receive a total amount exceeding 82,000 kr. and can never exceed 75% of
housing costs. No separate housing support is paid when
The cost of housing, after deducting housing benefits, is 50,000 kr. or less.
