Athletes of the Year in Hafnarfjörður
The Hafnarfjörður Town Council and the Sports and Leisure Committee today held an awards ceremony for athletes competing for teams from Hafnarfjörður, The awardees included Icelandic champions, cup winners, Nordic champions, world champions and recipients of special achievement awards, as well as the selections for the 2019 Sportswoman, Sportsman and Sports Team of Hafnarfjörður.
The 2019 Sportspeople of the Year in Hafnarfjörður were chosen today at the annual Sports and Awards Gala. Þórdís Eva Steinsdóttir, an athletics athlete from Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar, is the 2019 female athlete of Hafnarfjörður, and Anton Sveinn McKee, a swimmer from Sundfélag Hafnarfjarðar, is the 2019 male athlete of Hafnarfjörður. The 2019 Hafnarfjörður Achievement Team is the women's and men's first teams of the Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club, who during the year became Men's and women's cup champions in the 1st and 2nd divisions of the Swimming Association of Iceland. A large number of the swimmers on the team became multiple Icelandic champions and took part in numerous international competitions with good results.
Over 300 awards and 20 million króna

Over 300 individuals who won Icelandic championship titles with Hafnarfjörður teams in 2019 were recognised at the ceremony, along with awards for cup winners and those who achieved international titles. At the ceremony, Rio Tinto in Iceland, ÍBH and the City of Hafnarfjörður awarded 20 million króna from a fund intended to support sports activities for under-18s.
Athlete Thordis Eva Steinsdottir is the 2019 Sportswoman of Hafnarfjörður.
Þórdís Eva Steinarsdóttir is an athletics athlete from Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar. She is a member of the national athletics team and became a multiple-time Icelandic champion and cup winner with the FH team this year. At the Small Nations Games in Montenegro, she won the 400m and the 4x400m relay, becoming the Nordic U20 Champion in the 4x400m relay with a new Icelandic record. Þórdís Eva was part of the Icelandic relay team that set a national indoor record in the 4×200 m relay and achieved good results at international competitions during the year.
Swimmer Anton Sveinn McKee is Hafnarfjörður's Sportsman of the Year 2019.
Anton Sveinn, a swimmer from Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club and the Swimming Association of Iceland, became a multiple Icelandic champion during the year. He won four gold medals at the Small Nations Games in Montenegro and set two Icelandic records. At the World Championships in July, he achieved the Olympic qualifying standard in the 200m breaststroke in a 50m pool and broke three Icelandic records. At the European Championships in December, he set seven Icelandic records in the 25m pool, one Nordic record and equalled another. Anton Sveinn reached the final in all three of his individual events, achieving a best result of 4th place in the 200m breaststroke, as well as setting one national record in the relay with the Icelandic men's relay team.
