Strategic planning for Hafnarfjörður to 2035

The City of Hafnarfjörður is now taking the first steps in a comprehensive strategic planning process, in accordance with a resolution passed by the Hafnarfjörður Town Council on 12 August 2021. The project is about shaping a vision for Hafnarfjörður up to the year 2035 and, on that basis, building core objectives that support the formulation of short-term priorities.

This is done through strategic plans which set out measurable short-term objectives, and this work is carried out as a precursor to the budget process. This project takes a step towards linking the council's policies more closely with the allocation of funds and, consequently, its success.

The project was carried out with the extensive involvement of all parties concerned.

The project will be carried out with the extensive involvement of elected representatives, in consultation with committees and councils operating within the City of Hafnarfjörður. In addition, numerous members of staff from across all departments of the municipality will be involved in the project. Last but not least, meetings will be held with various interest groups of residents and businesses within Hafnarfjörður. The views of residents will also be sought through consultations on the council's website.

The Global Goals as a guide for the vision and overall strategy of Hafnarfjörður

 This comprehensive strategy will specifically adopt a holistic approach to the implementation of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals will not only serve as a foundation across the municipality's operations but also as a guiding light for the vision and overall strategy of Hafnarfjörður in the field of sustainable development. The Town Council has appointed a steering group to lead the project. The group includes Jón Ingi Hákonarson, Valdimar Víðisson, Sigurður Þ. Ragnarsson, Arnbjörn Ólafsson, Adda María Jóhannsdóttir and Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir. The group will be supported by Sigurjón Ólafsson, Director of the Service and Development Department; Sigurður Nordal, Director of the Administration Department; and Arnar Pálsson, a consultant at ARCUR. The project is expected to be completed in early 2022.

Next steps in broad engagement of all stakeholders

Initial meetings with company representatives will be held on 28 October and 3 November from 15:00 to 16:30.
