The largest swimming centre in the country
The swimming pool is indoor. The pool is 50 metres wide and is usually divided by a bridge, so that one half of the pool is 25 metres long and the other half is 50 metres. Ásvallalaug was inaugurated on 6 September 2008.
The sports centre at Ásvallalaug is one of the largest in the country, covering around 6,000 m². It also houses a fitness centre. Gym health in a 600 m² space, Ásmegin Physiotherapy and social facilities Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club and Fjarðar Sports Club.
Good accessibility for disabled people
A lift, fitted with a specialised wheelchair, wristband and remote control, is available for anyone who generally finds it difficult to get into larger swimming pools. The lift is of the Poolpod model and was originally designed for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Sjálfsbjörg has compiled information about accessibility at Ásvallalaug:
- Access. There are four spacious, designated disabled parking spaces outside the entrance to the swimming pool. The entrance is directly from the car park. There are no thresholds and the doors are wide.
- Changing rooms. The changing rooms are a short distance from the reception. There are two private cubicles, and a member of the opposite sex may assist in the cubicle, which are accessed from a corridor. Both cubicles are equipped with shower chairs. Next to these private cubicles are toilets with toilet frames.
- Swimming pool and hot tub facilities. A portable lift is available by the swimming pool. All pools and hot tubs are accessed by stepping down stairs, which are fitted with handrails.
- Discount. Swimming is free in Hafnarfjörður for disabled people who show a disability certificate.
A popular pool for families with children
The pool has a 17-metre children's pool (90–110 cm deep) and a 10-metre wading pool for the youngest generation with accompanying toys. The temperature of the children's pools is around 32°C, while the swimming pool is 28°C. The temperature inside the hall is always around 30°C. Indoors, there is also a popular water slide, three hot tubs and a steam room. Outdoors, there are two hot tubs and a good sunbathing area.
