The Áshamar nursery school was inaugurated today.
There was much to the opening of the nineteenth nursery in Hafnarfjörður during the midday. „The outdoor facilities here are certainly one of the most magnificent in the country,“ said a proud Guðrún Jóna Thorarensen at the ceremony, as she will be running the school for the municipality of Hafnarfjörður.

„Once again, congratulations, residents of Hafnarfjörður,“ said Eggert Jónsson, managing director of Þarfaþing, as he handed a key to the mayor, Valdimar Víðisson, for the premises of the Áshamar nursery in the Hamranes district, which Þarfaþing designed and built for the town.
„This is a day of joy and anticipation,“ said Valdimar at the opening of Áshamar, the 19th nursery school of the City of Hafnarfjörður, earlier today. „This is a day for the children who will be here and learn,“ he said. „Play schools play a key role in the lives of children and families. They are not only a place for play and learning but the foundation for social skills, independence and creativity.“ In the schools, they will grow, flourish and make friends.
A splendid nursery school
Eggert said they were lucky at Tharfastiðingur to have got Arkís for the design. „This is not just a magnificent nursery – it is a landmark project because Áshamar is the first nursery in Hafnarfjörður to be built as a modular building – a solution that combines speed, quality and cost-effectiveness,“ said Eggert.
The mayor then handed the key to Guðrún Jónu Thorarensen, managing director of Framtíðar fólks ehf. and the new head teacher of Áshamar nursery, as the company will now run the operation. Forty children have already started attending the nursery, 109 are registered, but the school has room for 120 children.
A design that fits perfectly
Guðrún said it was clear that professionals had been listened to in the design of the nursery school. „The building bears all the marks of nursery school teachers having influenced its design. The building lets light into the hearts of those who will be staying and working here,“ she said.
„She offers us the space to strengthen and develop with excellent working facilities and an environment that allows everyone to grow.“ The outdoor area is the largest and most magnificent she has ever seen. „It will undoubtedly be the finest in the country.“
The very cosy prefabricated house welcomed guests for this festive occasion. The house was dedicated and operations began.
