News

The Hafnarfjörður Boxing Club is celebrating its 20th anniversary tomorrow, Saturday, as this morning the club signed an agreement with the municipality of Hafnarfjörður for a magnificent new facility. The facility will be inaugurated tomorrow.

Hafnarfjörður Boxing Club 20 years

The aim is to increase the number of boxing practitioners in Hafnarfjörður. The town has signed a contract for the management and operation of the club's brand-new 2,000-square-metre sports facility at the Boxing Centre, Suðurhellu 5. The building's 20th anniversary and opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, 25th October.

Mayor Valdimar Víðisson says it is really pleasing to see boxing get such a splendid facility in Hafnarfjörður. This is not just a building but a platform for children and young people to strengthen their bodies and minds, and for many to find their sport. I warmly congratulate HFH, the staff and the members on this magnificent facility.

Gunnar Óli Guðjónsson, chairman of the Boxing Club, says the situation is a huge step up from what it has been. „We were in temporary premises and in the lurch. We are now settling into a new location, we're in the final stages.“

Gunnar Óli says the previous premises were an obstacle for the club. „We lost people because of the poor facilities. We are now aiming to grow again and reach about 100.“ He says the location is very convenient. Many children in the Völlunum area do not play sports, do not fit into the traditional ones, but would flourish in boxing.

„We are also going to work with the Krýsuvík Association. There is a lack of resources. Boys who have gone way off the rails. We are going to do a lot of preventative work and are therefore a sports club that caters for those 51% who don't find their place in sport but fit in with us. Mayor Valdimar understands this as a former headmaster,“ says Gunnar Óli.

He says there is a great boom in the sport. „We Icelanders have a professional in 60th place on the world heavyweight rankings, Kolbeinn Kristinsson. 18 fights, 18 wins and 12 knockouts. He is a great role model,“ says Gunnar Óli.

Under the agreement, primary school children will have the opportunity to learn about boxing. Other martial arts and combat sports, such as Jiu-jitsu, karate, Taekwondo, Sambo, judo and other similar disciplines, have the opportunity to access the training facility, provided this is specifically agreed on a case-by-case basis.

A very happy birthday and congratulations on these wonderful milestones.
