A relaxed atmosphere and a busy crowd worked professionally at the Centre this morning. Packing for the Fruit Truck was in full swing, as on other Mondays.

The centre has strengthened at a new location.

A relaxed atmosphere and a busy crowd worked professionally at the Centre this morning. They were working on fulfilling orders for the Fruit Truck, just like every Monday morning – and Wednesdays, too.

„The fruit lorry needs people who do this conscientiously. You have to think and be focused on the task. I was recommended the Centre. It has really worked out well. The managers are good, and the people are focused on what they're doing and have the ambition to do it well,“ says Haukur Magnússon, Managing Director of Ávaxtabíllinn.

Working for a company

The Centre for Work and Activity is located on Suðurgata and Selhæll here in Hafnarfjörður. It provides support to disabled individuals to develop their strengths, which contributes to increased participation in daily life, employment, and society on an equal basis with others.

There are four departments at the Centre.

  • Centre for social and physical activity
  • Centre for Non-Traditional Communication
  • Centre for sensory stimulation
  • Environmental Monitoring Centre – emphasis is placed on vocational training and public participation

Þórdís Rúriksdóttir, director of the Centre, says all projects are welcomed at the Centre. „Both in-house and external.“ The Centre is also currently working for Enso, The Icelandic Store and the City of Hafnarfjörður.

„The number of partner companies is growing, as the Centre has attracted a great deal of attention.“ Demand to work at the Centre has also increased, and a waiting list has formed. The Centre is a year old in this respect. It has been a year since the premises at Selhæll were put into use.

„We've settled in well. We're ready for more projects and more paid work for them, because that's what matters to them. It's quite clear that this premises has been a springboard for the activities.“

The fruit van for 22 years

The fruit truck distributes fruit and vegetables to businesses and operates under the fun slogan Invest better. The company is 22 years old.

Haukur says three cars run out on Monday mornings from the Centre. The drivers take over the packing as the work progresses. 10–15 people work on the packing each time.

„People get payslips and have their rights. I feel extremely comfortable with this partnership, as the service-mindedness is great and I can feel they are very fond of the project. It's a win-win and I recommend the Centre,“ says Haukur.
