Stronger for a results-driven culture
The first thirty managers of the City of Hafnarfjörður have now graduated from the Leadership School, the first to do so. This was celebrated with a graduation ceremony at Hafnarborg, where the course was held, yesterday afternoon, Monday. They were presented with a certificate and flowers by the Mayor, Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, who congratulated them and emphasised their importance in providing the town's excellent service.
The school's objectives are clear. They are to create a culture of results-oriented management in the workplace, in line with the motto of the City of Hafnarfjörður: friendly, reliable and smart service.
Powerful leaders
Guðbjörg Norðfjörð, headteacher of Hraunvallaskóli, gave a speech to her fellow students, saying that it is not a given to set aside time for self-improvement and professional development. „But by attending here every week, we have shown that we are not just prepared to grow as leaders, but also as individuals,“ she said, speaking about the importance of kindness and of considering people's well-being and the workplace's success.
„Let's train ourselves to be courageous leaders who set healthy boundaries, provide feedback, resolve disagreements and tackle difficult issues.“ She challenged her fellow students to utilise the strengths of others in their roles as managers for the City of Hafnarfjörður. „Let's help people find and utilise their strengths, support them, and I am sure that great things will happen.“ Sitting with colleagues from different parts of the council in the Leadership School had been the biggest lesson.
„Hafnarfjörður is extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic group of people who are prepared to do their very best to make things work.“
Empowering people with knowledge and encouragement
The managers gained insight, among other things, into empowering leadership training, good governance, how the leader is a driving force, finance, equality and management.
The establishment of the Leadership School is part of the initiative to make the City of Hafnarfjörður an even more sought-after workplace, comprising a strong leadership team and satisfied staff, in line with the City of Hafnarfjörður's human resources policy. Lecturers come from both the business community and within the City of Hafnarfjörður.
Yes, we are sure that strong leaders will make the town even better.
