A six-month pilot project – further development depends on interest and the number of active users.

The municipalities of Hafnarfjörður, Akureyri and Garðabær are participating in a pilot project on car sharing, led by the engineering firm EFLU in collaboration with the car sharing company Zipcar, with a grant from the Research Fund of the National Road Administration. The contribution of the municipalities consists primarily of allocating and marking a parking space for the car-sharing cars and assisting as much as possible with the implementation of the service. The project aims to assess the impact of introducing and promoting the growth of car-sharing in the three municipalities. During the pilot project, Efla will conduct research into travel habits and attitudes, along with analysing relevant data. The trial period is six months, and after this time, the project's continuation will depend on user interest and numbers. In this way, residents and business staff in Hafnarfjörður can have a direct influence on the growth of car sharing in the town.

Drive less and smarter

The concept of car-sharing is well-known worldwide, and research has shown that it can play a major role in residents' journey towards living without a private car, thereby promoting changes in travel habits. In Iceland, this service has only been available in central Reykjavík and Kópavogur, but for at least the next six months, it will also be available in Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and Akureyri. One car-sharing vehicle will be available to residents and businesses in Hafnarfjörður for at least these six months. It is hoped that after these six months, the car-sharing service will be self-sustaining and that this will create a long-term operational basis for the service in Hafnarfjörður.
