The Museum receives grants for good causes
The Folk Museum Received 5.9 million krónur in grants at the main allocation of the Cultural, Innovation and University Ministry's Museum Fund. This year, the grants enhance the exhibitions and history of the City of Hafnarfjörður in various ways. They are as follows:
- £1.1 million for an exhibition on the Promenade, where a new photography exhibition will be opened on 1 June.
- 1.5 million kronor is being spent on renovating Siggubær. A new exhibition about the common woman will be installed there. It will look at the daily lives of common women in Hafnarfjörður in the 20th century, and the exhibition opens on the first Friday in June.
- 1.5 million is going into a themed exhibition in the warehouse. The sporting history of Hafnarfjörður will be well represented.
- 1.8 million kronur will then go towards internal work at the warehouse. A job is needed to support all the town's exhibitions.
„We have never received so many grants before,“ says Björn Pétursson, the town's antiquary.
„We believe the outcome is down to the interesting projects we are working on. Good things are happening here in Hafnarfjörður. The grants show how important it is to preserve and share history.“
Björn says there is an exciting job ahead. „History comes alive when we look back, and that way we ensure we know what we are made of.“ He says the exhibition about working-class women is particularly interesting.
„Sigga herself says in her will that it is her wish for future generations to know what life was like in the 20th century. We therefore shed light on the everyday lives of ordinary women. This is a challenging task, as not much has been written about the lives of women in those years.“
The grants bolster the historical narrative. „So we say thank you.“
