The Hamraneshverfið in its glory

The foundations for Hamranesskóli have been laid. The neighbourhood is taking full shape, as the photos by photographer Ragnar Th. Sigurðsson for the contractor Ístak show.

The Hamraneshverfi district has been built in just over four years. The main road through the district was opened in 2022. The houses have sprung up one after another, many of them Swan-certified.

„This is a modern neighbourhood with up to 1,900 homes, this primary school and a nursery school. It is a short distance to the beautiful uplands,“ says Sigurður Haraldsson, Director of the Environmental and Planning Department. The neighbourhood will have a care home, and looking at the pictures, one can see that it is rising on the lava field, the largest vacant plot in the area.

The first phase of Hamranesskóli will be ready in autumn 2027, and the school itself, along with the neighbourhood, in 2029. Hamranesskóli will be a comprehensive school for children aged 12 months to 16 years. The school will be built according to an ambitious philosophy and will offer exciting opportunities for innovation in school life. The school will house an after-school club and a youth centre, along with a facility for the Hafnarfjörður Music School.

The contract with Ístak was signed at the Hafnarfjörður town offices this summer. The school will be the twelfth in the municipality of Hafnarfjörður and the tenth run by the town. It will cover 8,800 square metres.
