The heart of Hafnarfjörður is now pink.
The heart of Hafnarfjörður is adorned with pink lights to mark the occasion. Pink October has made its entrance. The heart was not only decorated with pink lights at the beginning of the month but also by the staff of the City of Hafnarfjörður, who stopped by in the evening to encourage their colleagues to show diligence.
Pink October is upon us
„We are pink. We have been diagnosed, been caught, or stood by our people in illness. Now is Pink October and that's why we encourage all women to look after themselves, to get screened – it simplifies life,“ say Hulda Þórarinsdóttir, Helga Snorradóttir, Kristín Jónsdóttir, Þórey Ósk Sæmundsdóttir, Jenný Dagbjört Gunnardóttir and Karítas Guðmundsdóttir, all from the town's education and public health department, together with Gunnhildur Arna Gunnarsdóttir and Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir. Yes, in this group are winners who know how important it is to look after themselves, as well as their loved ones.
Annual Cancer Awareness Initiative
Pink October is the annual awareness month dedicated to the fight against cancers in women. This year, the Cancer Society is focusing on loved ones under the slogan „You change everything”. The Cancer Society's website says: „We want to thank those who neither expect nor expect to receive thanks, the people who are so important but tend to be forgotten – the carers.“
The page also reports that in Iceland, an average of 971 women are diagnosed with cancer each year. „Fortunately, there are constant advances in diagnosis and treatment which lead to more and more people surviving. At the end of 2023, 10,070 women were alive after having had cancer but unfortunately, cancer is still the leading cause of premature death in Iceland and each year we lose an average of around 306 women to cancer.“
Pink Day 23 October
On Tuesday, 1st October, the Cancer Society's annual awareness and fundraising campaign dedicated to the fight against cancers in women began. On 23rd October, we will be wearing pink.
