The Hlíðarendi children showed their graduation project to the mayor.
The graduating group of children at the Hlíðarendi nursery school welcomed the mayor this morning and presented their final project: a custom-made town that covered the entire floor of the classroom. The town is called Hafnarfjörður.
A rich tradition at Hlíðarendi
The graduating group of children at the Hlíðarendi nursery school welcomed the mayor this morning and presented their final project, a custom-made town that covered the entire floor of the classroom.
For many years, the nursery's oldest group has visited the mayor at Hafnarfjörður Town Hall for a chat. That happened just last week. The children then invited the mayor to their graduation show. This is also an annual visit, but it was the first time this group had experienced it, as well as the first time the mayor, Valdimar, had attended – after all, he only took office at the start of the year.
In the children's town, you can find a swimming pool, an airport, a double-decker bus and various well-known landmarks here in Hafnarfjörður. Among them is our good lighthouse.
There was a great deal of tension in the group, and they vied to show the mayor their particular part of this year's development.
Annual yet unique graduation exhibition
A show like this has now been staged at the school for over 20 years. This graduation show has therefore long since become a tradition.
The children all come with suggestions for the name of their village. This year, the name Hafnarfjörður was the winning one. There were over 10 suggestions; Airplane Town, Crackerjack Town, Jumping Town. They then put up their hands to support each suggestion. In the end, a secret ballot was held between the top three. They wrote 1, 2 or 3 on a slip of paper, and the name Hafnarfjörður received 8 out of 17 votes.
These reciprocal visits are always great fun, and the children are very enthusiastic about the mayor's projects and duties.
Go Hlíðarendi! I wish you all the best at your new school.
