The Creative Summer Jobs project was first launched in Hafnarfjörður in 2017, inviting individuals and groups aged 18-20, with a permanent residence in Hafnarfjörður, to submit ideas for creative projects. Selected groups were given the opportunity to work on various creative projects in different areas of the arts, which enlivened the town's social life and delighted tourists and residents in one way or another.
In 2021, changes were made to the entry requirements: the age limit was raised to 18–25, and when assessing applications, consideration was given to the majority of the group being registered residents of Hafnarfjörður or for the project to be based and operated there. The gender balance of the groups was also taken into consideration when selecting them.
Since 2021, the residents of Hafnarfjörður have benefited from the project every summer. The demand is considerable, with groups of young people applying for the position and giving it their all in the hope of being chosen as one of that summer's participants.
In the summer of 2025, the Creative Summer Job was run as part of the Hafnarfjörður Work Experience Scheme, in collaboration with the Innovation Centre at Lækinn. Its aim is to bring the town to life, making it more fun, beautiful and diverse through artistic and creative events. As well as being a springboard for young artists to develop further in their art, train in working independently and showcase their creative work.
