The Leadership School graduates executives for the second time

Nearly 60 managers from the City of Hafnarfjörður have now graduated from the city's leadership school. Nearly 30 graduated at the end of last week. „We have been given a unique opportunity,“ said Guðbjörg Ósk Gísladóttir, a department head and one of the graduates.

Graduated from school for the second time

Around thirty managers from the City of Hafnarfjörður have now joined the ranks of those who have graduated from the city's Leadership School. This is the second group to graduate from the school. Another course is planned for this autumn.

„We are seeing good results in the workplace analysis and that we are moving upwards in the Gallup service survey. That is thanks to you and all the town's staff,“ said Mayor Valdimar Víðisson in the management team's minutes this past weekend. He said it was important to be able to have a good sense of humour in one's work.

Humour and humility are important

„Managers must be able to laugh. Also to admit their weaknesses, because then it is so easy to correct oneself,“ said the mayor at the graduation, wishing them good luck.

The objectives of the Leadership School are clear. They are to create a culture of results-oriented management in the workplace, in line with the motto of the City of Hafnarfjörður: friendly, reliable and smart service.

Guðlaug Ósk Gísladóttir, Head of the Department for Family and Child Affairs, gave a speech on behalf of the graduates.

„In recent weeks, we have had a unique opportunity to come together, managers from different departments of the town, to listen to informative presentations, meet up and share our work experiences,“ she said.

Important to be able to meet challenges

„By attending here each week, we have shown that we want to develop ourselves as leaders to better meet the challenges we face every day, for the benefit of the town's residents, staff, and the Borough of Hafnarfjörður.“

Guðlaug described how important it was for a manager to be well-equipped with the right tools, knowledge and equipment.

„With the Leadership School, the City of Hafnarfjörður is giving us the opportunity and the „equipment“ to become better at dealing with changing circumstances at all times. We are being guided to become positive influencers, to gain the courage to build trust and speak to people with our hearts, especially when something comes up,“ she said.

„The management is being given the tools to bring the group to its destination.“ The aim is for everyone to work towards the same goal as one team.

Empowering people with knowledge and encouragement

These managers, like the first group, gained insight into empowering leadership training, good governance, how the leader is a driving force, finance, equality and management.

The establishment of the Leadership School is part of the initiative to make the City of Hafnarfjörður an even more sought-after workplace, comprising a strong leadership team and satisfied staff, in line with the City of Hafnarfjörður's human resources policy. Lecturers come from both the business community and within the City of Hafnarfjörður.
