Delays to rubbish collection are expected to continue this week. The Mayor and staff of the City of Hafnarfjörður met with representatives of Terra today, where the situation was reviewed and the need to take radical action was reiterated. Terra plans to have two additional refuse lorries in Hafnarfjörður this week and expects this addition will get the refuse collection back on track at the beginning of next week. Staff shortages and illness at the service provider are the main reason for the situation.

Six-day delay in rubbish collection

Rubbish has been piling up in many parts of Hafnarfjörður over the past few days and weeks. Hundreds of complaints have been received directly by the local council over the Christmas period and at the start of the new year. It is clear that at the start of the new week, there is still a delay of at least six days in the emptying of household rubbish. If all goes to plan, Terra expects that everything will be back on track and in line with the council's rubbish collection schedule by Monday, 27th January. Normally, extra bags and overfills are not collected from homes, but while the situation is as it is, flexibility is increased and every effort is being made to get the rubbish collection back on track.

It is worth mentioning that waste collection runs quite smoothly at other times of the year. At the same time, it is clear that a clearer plan and schedule must be established between the service provider and the City of Hafnarfjörður when the pressure is greatest – during the Christmas period itself. Chief among these is the City of Hafnarfjörður's demand for additional staff to prevent a service failure at this time of year. It should also be noted that the City of Hafnarfjörður maintains a strong and good working relationship with the service provider throughout the year.
