The musical Singin' in the Rain this weekend
This year, Year 10 pupils at Víðistaðaskóli are staging the musical Singin' in the Rain, in an Icelandic translation by Karl Ágúst Úlfsson. The project is an annual collaboration between the school, the youth club Hraunið, and parents, and all Year 10 pupils are involved in the project in some way.
The Víðistaðaskóli musical this year is Singin' in the Rain!
Year 10 at Víðistaðaskóli has been putting on musicals since the school was founded. With each passing year, the musicals have become more elaborate and ambitious, and this year the students are staging the musical Singin' in the Rain, in an Icelandic translation by Karl Ágúst Úlfsson. The musical Singin' in the Rain tells the story of a Hollywood star of the early 20th century and their struggle to survive during a period of great upheaval in the film industry, when silent films transitioned to talking pictures.
The sports hall at Víðistaðaskóli is transformed into a small theatre.
The production is directed by Níels Thibaud Girerd, with musical direction by Jóhanna Ómarsdóttir, costume design by Kristín Högna Garðarsdóttir, and choreography by Mirjam Yrsa Friðleifsdóttir and Emelía Guðbjörg Þórðardóttir. The set design, costumes, make-up, lighting and sound are all handled by the pupils and their parents. The project is an annual collaboration between the school, the youth club Hraunið, and the parents, and all Year 10 pupils are involved in the project in some way. The ambition put into this project is enormous, and it is wonderful to watch the sports hall at Víðistaðaskóli transform into a small theatre.
