A sheltered and popular outdoor gem for everyone
Hvaleyrarvatn is one of the most beautiful lakes in the capital region and has one of the most beautiful surroundings. Thanks in part to the Hafnarfjörður Forestry Association, which has worked hard for over 60 years to make Höfðaskóg this sheltered and popular outdoor recreation gem, the forest surrounds the lake. On the hillside beyond the sandspit is Skátalundur, the cabin of the St. George's Guild in Hafnarfjörður.
A wonderful ski slope or cross-country ski trail in winter
Parking is easy to find near Lake Hvaleyrarvatn, and there are many varied walking trails in the area, with benches at several designated spots. It is popular to go kayaking or rowing on the lake, or to splash about barefoot in the sun, as the water is shallow and very family-friendly. When it freezes, Hvaleyrarvatn turns into a wonderful ice rink or a cross-country skiing trail. The location is very popular with groups of all ages and for all kinds of purposes, but with the same goal – to enjoy the unique and colourful nature of the Hafnarfjörður hinterland.
