The Portrait of Mary – help recreate a work of art

Hafnarborg is currently working on the installation of the retrospective exhibition, 'Lengi skal manninn reyna', which will feature works by the artist Þorvaldur Þorsteinsson (1960-2013). The exhibition will recreate one of the artist's works, 'The Picture of Mary', which Þorvaldur first exhibited at an exhibition in the Akureyri Art Museum in 1996. The exhibition at Hafnarborg will also open on Þorvaldur's birthday, the 7th of November.

Participating artworks of María

The portrait of Maria is a participatory artwork which involved the artist requesting to borrow photographs from people named Maria who lived in Akureyri. He then displayed all the photographs together in one space of the museum, under soft lighting, imbued with a sacred aura. In doing so, he referred to sacred Marian images, connecting the everyday and the sacred in his work.
Hafnarborg is now appealing to Maria, who are resident in Hafnarfjörður, to lend the museum photographs of themselves to be shown in an upcoming retrospective exhibition of the artist's work. The image can be a passport photograph or a larger photograph, a selfie taken on a phone, a picture from the family album, a drawing or a painting, if such exists, a headshot or a full-length portrait, entirely at your discretion. The size or age of the image is not important; rather, the aim is to ensure the greatest possible variety in form and appearance.

The picture can be delivered to the Hafnarborg reception during the museum's opening hours or by email to the address hafnarborg@hafnarfjordur.is However, please ensure that the photo is accompanied by the participant's full name and telephone number. Photos will be accepted until 10 October. After the exhibition has finished, participants will then be able to collect their photo from the museum reception.
