The Icelandic Sports and Olympic Association, together with its partners, launched the project. Let's walk to school for the thirteenth time on Wednesday 4 September. Last year, millions of children from over 40 countries around the world took part in Walk to School in one way or another. Here in Iceland, participation has grown steadily over the years, and while there were 26 participating schools in the first year, a total of 73 schools had signed up by 2018.

Let's choose an active mode of transport

The aim of the project is to encourage children to adopt an active mode of travel to and from school, and to increase their skills in travelling safely in traffic. One of the simplest ways to increase physical activity in daily life is to choose an active mode of transport, such as walking, cycling, running, roller skating and skateboarding. The benefits are not only related to mental and physical well-being, but it is also an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to get around.

The initiative has become an annual event in many schools, offering a fun and educational way for pupils to learn about road safety, security and environmental issues.
