The Pensioners' Association settles in Flatahraun until the year 2041
The Pensioners' Association of Hafnarfjörður will be at Flatahraun 3 until at least the year 2041. This was secured in a contract signed on Friday.
More space for the senior citizens' association
„A very happy day to you. February 2026 has been magnificent, but I think this tops it all. This has been our long-held dream,“ said Valgerður Sigurðardóttir, chairwoman of the Pensioners' Association in Hafnarfjörður.
On Friday, Valgerður signed a lease agreement on behalf of the association, securing its presence at Flatahrauni 3 until 2041. The City of Hafnarfjörður leases the premises from the trade union Hlíf. The association also signed one. Service contract for the operation and activities of the youth centre Hraunsels earlier in the month.
An important day
„This day is important for the club's future. We can see that we can be here for the next fifteen years and the club can continue to flourish,“ she said, pointing out that the premises were purpose-built for the activity. The club has been at Flatahraun since 2002, but before that was at Reykjavikurvegur 50. It was founded in 1968.
Great growth
„Ten years ago, there were 1,164 members on 12 courses here. Now there are 2,400 and twenty courses. This building just keeps taking it all in. It's like a rubber band. Our heart is here and this means so much to us,“ said Valgerður at the signing, as she has been the one to lead this for the past decade as chairperson and has witnessed these changes.
She says that the uncertainty over the past few months, when it was unclear whether the operation would remain in the building, has taken its toll, and so the joy is great. „I am so incredibly happy, and we all are, and I know the board has been very worried. I'm going to say: Now our energy will go into driving the work forward,“ she said. „Heartfelt thanks and a very warm congratulations,“ she said.
A flourishing association
Mayor Valdimar Víðisson joins in the congratulations. „Social activities for older people have grown and flourished in recent years under the leadership of FEBH. It is therefore a great pleasure to be able to sign this agreement and further establish the activities. The agreement also provides for additional space, which is extremely welcome as FEBH has seen a steady increase in membership.“
Yes, a heartfelt congratulations to everyone for the excellent work and the people of the Association of Senior Citizens in Hafnarfjörður.
