Skarðshlíðarskóli receives a grant from Programmers of the Future

The developers of the future have now completed this year's grant awards, and 29 primary schools received grants totalling 9 million króna. Skarðshlíðarskóli is one of the schools that received a grant, which will be used to purchase Lego WeDo with the aim of teaching pupils the fundamentals of programming and increasing their technological literacy. 

The developers of the future have now completed this year's grant allocations, awarding 29 primary schools grants totalling 9 million krónur. 1.5 million was allocated to in-school courses, while 7.5 million was for the purchase of smaller devices for programming and technology teaching, along with the distribution of used computer equipment. Skarðshlíðarskóli in Hafnarfjörður is one of the schools that received a grant, which will be used to purchase Lego WeDo with the aim of teaching pupils the fundamentals of programming and increasing their technological literacy. 

It is clear that the need for support in this area is great, but this year applications for grants totalled over 40 million kronur, and it was not possible to award grants to all applicants. The greatest interest was in grants for the purchase of smaller equipment, but there were also many applications for grants for courses and second-hand computer equipment. Applications could be made in the following categories:

  • Course grant for teachers for teaching programming and technology
  • Computer equipment; used desktop computers, monitors, mice and keyboards, inspected by the system administrators of the FF supporters.
  • Grant for the development of teaching materials in programming and technology education
  • Grant for the purchase of smaller equipment for programming and technology teaching (not computers)

Álftanesskóli, Bíldudalsskóli, Dalvíkurskóli, Egilsstaðaskóli, Flataskóli, Flúðaskóli, Foldaskóli, Giljaskóli, Grenivíkurskóli, Grunnskóli Fáskrúðsfjarðar, Grunnskóli Grundarfjarðar, Grunnskólinn í Stykkishólmi, Háaleitis School, Hlíðaskóli, Höfðaskóli, Kársnesskóli, Landakots School, Laugarnesskóli, Myllubakkaskóli, Norðlingaskóli, Njarðvíkurskóli, Sjálands School, Skarðshlíð School, Tálknafjarðarskóli, Valsárskóli, Varmahlíðarskóli, Vesturbæjarskóli, Víkurskóli and Vogaskóli.

Programmers of the Future is a fund established in 2014 with the aim of promoting programming and technology education in the country's primary and secondary schools. This year's supporters of the fund are RB, Landsbankinn, CCP, Össur, Íslandsbanki and Webmo design. The fund is recognised as being essential for connecting the business community, educational institutions and other stakeholders, with the aim of ensuring as many young people as possible acquire the fundamental skills needed to become the programmers of the future.
