Sörli gets a new riding arena

„A first-class facility that will be looked to as a benchmark,“ says Atli Már Ingólfsson, chairman of the riding club Sörli, of the club's new riding arena which will be inaugurated today, Wednesday, 4th June. „Now there will be a turning point in the club's history.“ The arena is 71 by 35 metres and the hall has seating for 800 spectators.

  • A short formal programme will be held at the opening of the Sörli riding arena and riding displays. The Reverend Stefán Már Gunnlaugsson, a Sörli member, will bless the building. The construction company Eykt built the building and will formally hand it over to the City of Hafnarfjörður. The Mayor will then hand the building over to the chairman of Sörli.

First-class facilities

„We are committed to providing the residents of Hafnarfjörður with excellent facilities for leisure and sport. This riding arena epitomises that policy and is a fine addition to the town's other impressive sporting facilities,“ says Valdimar Víðisson about the new riding arena.

„Heartfelt congratulations on the building, which will be a complete revolution for equestrians. The Sörli Riding Club is a club over 80 years old with a strong history and tradition here in Hafnarfjörður. The facilities for equestrians will be among the most magnificent in the country,“ he says.

The social life has grown rapidly

Atli Már says the club's activities have exploded in popularity. In a short space of time, membership has increased from 600 to just over 1,000. It was about two decades ago that the old riding arena, the first in the capital region, became too small. The club is extremely pleased with the support from the town.

„We're now tripling our riding arena. You could say our classrooms are increasing from one to four,“ he says. „The riding arena is also designed to support the outdoor competition area. It will provide both shelter and a spectator stand. The design is fantastic. Both its location and its orientation are very clever,“ describes Atli, adding that the arena will make a huge difference for indoor competitions in Iceland.

„Here is a heated facility for warming up in the old hall. Everywhere else, riders warm up outside in the frost and snow. The same flooring will be imported from Denmark for both halls. This riding hall is equipped with all the latest equipment. People will look to this building in the future.“
