Data from Vodafone to the City of Hafnarfjörður did not include telephone numbers for which the City of Hafnarfjörður's contribution to payment is capped, and therefore covered far fewer telephone numbers than has previously been reported in the media.

In light of the discussion regarding the City of Hafnarfjörður's monitoring of calls from its telephone system, the City of Hafnarfjörður wishes to make the following statement:

Data from Vodafone to the City of Hafnarfjörður did not include telephone numbers for which the city's contribution cap applies, and therefore covered far fewer telephone numbers than has previously been reported in the media.

In a statement from Vodafone to the town, it is stated, among other things, that the data only covered telephone numbers for which the City of Hafnarfjörður is a subscriber and pays in full. This means that they did not include numbers for which the town makes a partial payment, but this is the rule that generally applies to the mobile phones of staff and elected representatives.

Following a complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office, it was revealed, according to information from Vodafone, that the data were much more limited than had previously been stated. As they had been deleted, the City of Hafnarfjörður was unable to verify this, but Vodafone's statement reveals the correct information.

Statement from Vodafone, 25 February 2015

„It is hereby confirmed that the call data sent to the City of Hafnarfjörður consisted solely of data for which the City of Hafnarfjörður is the subscriber and is fully liable for payment. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the procedure for sending the data was in full compliance with the operating procedures of Fjarskiptin hf. (Vodafone), where the utmost security was maintained during the handling and delivery of the data.“
