Terra Environmental Services handles waste collection for the City of Hafnarfjörður. Alongside the introduction of a new waste sorting system, Terra has upgraded its fleet to dual-compartment refuse lorries, which will be responsible for waste collection in all neighbourhoods in Hafnarfjörður. Like the City of Hafnarfjörður, with the introduction of a new waste collection system, Terra places great emphasis on making it easier for the residents of Hafnarfjörður to reuse, sort and manage recyclable materials and other waste responsibly.

Four waste streams collected from every household

A dedicated team of Terra staff collects food waste and mixed waste fortnightly, and plastic and paper every 28 days. At collection, the waste is loaded into the separate compartments of dual-compartment lorries and unloaded separately at the relevant Sorpu reception sites.

Distribution of new rubbish bins is underway.

The distribution of new dual-compartment rubbish bins began in the Holt area of Hafnarfjörður on Monday, 22 May, and is now almost complete, with only a few exceptions. Distribution began in the west end of Hafnarfjörður on 31 May and has also started in the town centre. The distribution in the town centre is expected to be completed on Monday, 5 June, after which it will begin in Ásland and the blocks on the North Shore. All detached houses will receive one new two-chambered bin for food and mixed waste, and blocks of flats will receive new bins for food waste. The new sorting system means that, by law, four types of waste will now be collected from every household in the town. Other categories must be taken directly to the appropriate containers at the tip or to local recycling centres. This new system represents a major step forward for the municipalities' environmental efforts. With correct sorting, waste can be reduced and valuable materials reused instead of being thrown away.
