UN Global Compact in Iceland, in collaboration with the United Nations Association of Iceland with the support of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, is organising a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Flag Day for the first time in Iceland. The City of Hafnarfjörður is participating in the Flag Day by hoisting the flag at the Hafnarfjörður Town Hall. The City of Hafnarfjörður's strategic plan for 2035 is built around nine main objectives linked to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Each of these is intended to contribute to long-term improvements and positive changes, so that the municipality's vision of a sustainable community, the well-being of its residents, and its character can become a reality.

Commitment to the Global Goals and key actions

The purpose of the Day of Action is to remind people of the importance of the Global Goals and for businesses, institutions, civil society organisations, schools and local authorities around the world to demonstrate their commitment to the Global Goals and the actions they require. On 25 September 2023, it will be eight years since the UN's Sustainable Development Goals were adopted. The Goals include a call for international cooperation to improve well-being and make the world a better place by 2030. Although significant progress has been made in various areas, the journey to 2030 is halfway through, and it is clear that greater momentum is needed in action to achieve the intended results. The UN Global Compact's flagship campaign was launched in the Netherlands in 2019, and the initiative's popularity has grown rapidly. This year, hundreds of companies, institutions, NGOs, schools and local authorities are taking part in the campaign day around the world under the name TogetherForTheSDGs.
