Valdimar Víðisson, the new mayor

New mayor for Hafnarfjörður from the New Year

Over the New Year period, Valdimar Víðisson took over as Mayor of Hafnarfjörður from Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, who has held the post since June 2018.  

The change of mayor is in accordance with an agreement between the Independence Party and the Progressive Party after the local elections in May 2022, that the leader of the Independence Party would hold the post of mayor until 1. January 2025, when the leader of the Progressive Party would take over. Valdimar has been chairman of the town council during the term of office and Rósa now takes over that chairmanship, in addition to having been elected to the Althingi recently.  

Valdimar says he is very much looking forward to interacting with residents and the business community in his role as mayor, as well as collaborating with the town's staff.. As chairman of the town council and a town councillor, I am already very familiar with the main issues that are currently at the forefront for the local authority. However, there is much on the mayor's desk that I will need to familiarise myself with, as the City of Hafnarfjörður is a large municipality offering a wide and varied range of services to its residents and businesses. My ambition is to continue on the path of development and progress that has been set in recent years.„    

Well-versed in local affairs in Hafnarfjörður 

Valdimar is well-versed in the affairs of Hafnarfjörður. He served as an alternate town councillor for the Progressive Party in Hafnarfjörður during the 2018 to 2022 term and was the chairman of the Family Council during that period. Valdimar was elected to the Hafnarfjörður Town Council in the local elections on 14 May 2022 and has since been the chairman of the town board. Valdimar has also been the headteacher of Öldutúnsskóli since 2008, for sixteen years. Valdimar Víðisson was born on 10 September 1978. He is married to Sigurborgu Geirdal and has one son, two stepdaughters and two grandchildren.
