The National Commissioner of Police, in consultation with the police in the South-West, has activated the Civil Defence emergency level due to the eruption that has begun in Geldingadalur.
The National Commissioner of Police, in consultation with the police in the South-West, has activated the emergency level of Civil Protection due to the eruption that has started again in Geldingadalur. According to information from the Icelandic Meteorological Institute, lava is flowing in Geldingadalur, a short distance north-east of the crater that lasted the longest last year. Based on the information currently available, infrastructure is not in danger, but the public are kindly asked to keep away from the area and to be mindful of the danger from potential gas contamination. This is stated in a notice from the Civil Protection Service.
