Hafnarfjörður encourages residents to park their vehicles correctly. No special rules apply in the town. The Highway Code is followed. First and foremost, attention is paid to car parks and streets in industrial areas, the town centre, and older neighbourhoods where streets are often narrow.

Let's get to know the law – and apply it correctly!

The Hafnarfjörður Car Park Fund is now in full swing. A car park attendant is going around the town to ensure that vehicles are parked correctly. This is being done to improve traffic safety here in Hafnarfjörður.

The Hafnarfjörður Car Park Fund is responsible for enforcing that vehicles are parked in accordance with the Road Traffic Act no. 77/2019. Please note that in Hafnarfjörður, no special rules regarding where or how vehicles may be parked exist beyond the general regulations set out by law.

The main focus of the Car Park Fund is to monitor car parks and streets. in industrial areas and in the city centre. Also in older neighbourhoods where streets are often narrow. and incorrectly parked cars can create an increased danger, particularly for pedestrians, moving traffic and the access of emergency vehicles.

The lake warden also responds to reports from residents when vehicles are reported to be parked illegally.

  • From April until mid-June, nearly 600 warnings were issued for illegal parking.
  • Since the collection of fines for parking offences began, an average of around 10 parking fines have been issued per day.

Hafnarfjörður encourages residents to work together to lower this figure by being mindful of where and how vehicles are parked. Let us apply the discipline set by the law.

  • It is worth mentioning that many people do not seem to realise that, according to the Highway Code, it is forbidden to park a vehicle against the direction of traffic on a street. Let's be clear about this and park correctly. A legally parked car will not be fined for parking on a parking bay.
