News

It is fitting to publish a recording of the address by the 2023 Miss Hafnarfjörður on Women's Rights Day itself, 19 June. It was on 19 June 1915 that women in Iceland, aged 40 and over, were granted the right to vote and stand for election to the Althingi. The day has since been an occasion for celebrations and festivities in honour of that struggle.

Happy birthday!

It is fitting to publish a recording of the address by the 2023 Miss Hafnarfjörður on Women's Rights Day itself, 19 June. It was on 19 June 1915 that women in Iceland, aged 40 and over, were granted the right to vote and stand for election to the Althingi. The day has since been an occasion for celebrations and festivities in honour of the struggle waged for greater rights and independence for women, a struggle that began in 1885. The age restriction was subsequently removed from the law by the 1918 Treaty of Union between Denmark and Iceland, thereby granting women the same right to vote as men.

The singer from Hafnarfjörður, Klara Elíasdóttir, is the 2023 Miss Hafnarfjörður. Klara premiered her song 'Loforð', her 2023 Mountain Maiden's address and love letter to Hafnarfjörður, on National Day, 17 June 2023, in the heart of Hafnarfjörður in front of a large crowd.

Happy day, ladies and everyone from Hafnarfjörður!
