The Learning Centre by the Stream (the old Stream School) will be a house of opportunities, creativity and technology.
Creative and progressive entrepreneurial and educational work in Hafnarfjörður will be further strengthened with the establishment and opening of a new innovation centre on the first floor of the Menntasetrið við Lækinn. Project managers, Margrét Lena Kristensen and Sólveig Rán Stefánsdóttir, have been appointed to oversee the development, and last week the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, handed them the keys to the premises. The upper floors of the Learning Centre by the Stream are already home to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Iceland, and it is clear that numerous opportunities lie ahead.
It is important that the people of Hafnarfjörður have a stake in the centre.
The Innovation Centre will be a creative hub for entrepreneurs, businesses, students and staff of the schools in the municipality, which aims to promote, strengthen and support innovation, technological literacy, creative thinking and the advancement of ideas in all fields. In Hafnarfjörður, there is a vibrant cultural scene, with great creativity and productivity within strong and dynamic companies, creative schooling, and many people with excellent ideas, making for significant opportunities. The emphasis is on exemplary facilities for all groups in society, with a strong focus on the active participation of the town's residents and businesses in the development. Initially, the centre's core activity will focus on providing robust services and knowledge sharing for all interested parties, with the facilities being developed gradually in line with needs, interests, and opportunities. The hub will offer creative space and access to technology, and will be open to all interested parties. There will also be outstanding staff with a passion for and knowledge of innovation to help people develop their skills and bring their ideas to fruition.

Sólveig Rán Stefánsdóttir and Margrét Lena Kristensen are project managers at the Innovation Centre of Hafnarfjörður.
Design, creation and technology as part of 21st-century literacy
The national curriculum for the school stages emphasises design and creation as part of 21st-century scientific, technological, and cultural literacy, and it is clear that interdisciplinary collaboration and problem-solving will be increasingly important in the education and work of the future. Each school must have the opportunity to experiment and develop diverse teaching methods that support adaptation to an ever-changing environment and technological development. This initiative by the City of Hafnarfjörður is part of creating such a framework and a platform for testing and developing school and entrepreneurial activities. In this way, a community of diverse individuals is created, working together on new solutions and developing opportunities for the benefit of the entire community.
