Youth Council for Education
An Youth Council has been established by the National Education Agency, comprising teenagers aged 14–18 from all over the country. The young people will advise the agency on matters and projects concerning children and teenagers.
A Youth Council has been established by the National Centre for Education, comprising teenagers aged 14–18 from all over the country. The young people will advise the centre on matters and projects concerning children and teenagers. Bjarki Steinar Viðarsson from the Hafnarfjörður Youth Council is the representative for Hafnarfjörður on the council.
Among the tasks this young people will be involved in is acting as advisors on the vision for matters concerning their age group. For example, curriculum assessment, the publication of learning materials, enrolment, and more. They will also attend meetings, seminars or conferences organised by the National Education Agency, as required, and give presentations at conferences, write articles for newspapers and meet with government officials, to name but a few of their tasks.
In total, there are 22 young people on the newly established council, 12 girls and 10 boys. They were selected by the partners of the National Education Agency following a consultation meeting this spring with representatives from the various existing youth councils. The partners are Barnaheill, the Children's Ombudsman, the Association of Icelandic Local Authorities, UMFÍ, SAFT, Unicef and Samfés.
Subsequently, the National Education Agency sought nominations from these parties, and the youth council was subsequently established. The supervisor is Erla Ósk Guðjónsdóttir, and the following young people serve on the council:
