Twelve Hafnarfjörður sports clubs received a total of 13.2 million krónur from the joint sponsorship fund of Rio Tinto and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður on Wednesday, 25 June 2025.

The sports grant is presented at a ceremony at the Straumsvík aluminium smelter for athletes aged 18 and under from the member clubs of the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association (ÍBH). Rannveig Rist, Managing Director of Rio Tinto in Iceland, presented the grants in the presence of Valdimar Víðisson, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, and Hrafnkell Marinósson, Chairman of ÍBH. They also signed a new agreement for the years 2025-2027 between the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association, Rio Tinto and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður.

Twenty-four million a year

Rio Tinto and the City of Hafnarfjörður will each pay 12 million króna in 2025 into the partnership to support children's sports in Hafnarfjörður. Grant allocations are made in June and December based on applications from clubs and the terms of the agreement.

The current amount, 13.2 million króna, is about 55% of the sum. It is aimed at participants who train at least twice a week for four months of the year.

The number of children behind the grant is increasing.

Support was sought for 5,419 children last year, but for 5,631 children this year. The number of children therefore increased by 212 between years.

  • Hafnarfjörður Gymnastics Club kr. 4,346,084.
