Sand at the Service Centre

News

As in previous years, residents of Hafnarfjörður can collect sand from the town's Service Centre at Norðurhellu. There, sand can be taken from baskets at the front entrance, and bags and shovels are provided. The baskets are always refilled at the end of the day.

It's safe to say we've been exceptionally lucky with the weather and conditions this winter, and it's only now that we need to be on our guard and take particular care.

Significant ice has formed on roads, pavements and car parks across the town in recent days, particularly early in the morning when people of all ages are travelling to and from school and/or work. The City of Hafnarfjörður's Service Centre is on duty almost around the clock for gritting and sanding, but this is not always sufficient. Gritting and snow clearance duties generally begin on 15 October and last until 15 April each year. The anti-slip measures are primarily preventative, using salting and gritting.

We encourage residents to be aware of their local surroundings and to assist with sanding to ensure the safety of everyone. Including your own.
