The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður provides education for parents of young children with the aim of raising parents' awareness of the importance of language development.

The City of Hafnarfjörður provides education for parents of young children with the aim of raising parents' awareness of the importance of language development. Numerous studies have shown that by stimulating language development, it is possible to strengthen the foundational elements of literacy and support good academic achievement.

This project is part of the literacy strategy for Hafnarfjörður and is being carried out in close collaboration with the Hafnarfjörður Public Library and the health centres in Hafnarfjörður.  Hafnarfjörður Public Library and the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður have joined forces to give all children aged 6 to 24 months a book as a gift, which is presented at an educational session in each neighbourhood. All parents of children in this age group are invited to an educational session in their local area. If the time of a meeting in your area does not suit you, you are welcome to attend a meeting in another area.

Meeting agenda

  • A talk on language development and language stimulation, delivered by the council's speech and language therapists.
  • A brief introduction to the Hafnarfjörður Library and its services for children.
  • Presentation of a book gift and a library card for the child.
